v12-13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!”
Jesus was someone who certainly gained fame and favor with the Jews (well the common folks anyways not the prestigious). The common folks greeted him with awe, praising his name. The palm branches were like a Hollywood red carpet in that day.
I think anyone else would have fallen victim to a swollen head and pranced in on a Clydesdale (limousine) and taken it all in. But Jesus staying true to His humility chose to ride in on a donkey. Donkey's are not known for grace... especially a colt. A clumsy newborn. I can just picture everyone awaiting royalty and a staggering donkey comes along.
Now that is a picture of humility! Some resources suggested that this was for Jesus to better connect with the common people. He can work through them/us.
v14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
This was prophesized that Jesus would come in on a donkey so I think Jesus was proving that God does what He says. His word is bond! His word is truth! His word can be trusted!
Furthermore a donkey signifies peace, which could be a foreshadowing of what Jesus can offer to those that still accept Him in his humility.
1 Peter 5:5 All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.
Have you ever worked or been around someone who thought they were higher in status? There is not much that is teachable for people that know it all and are at the highest of highs. They/we can become our own Gods. This has been a source of contention for me lately (on both ends of the spectrum) and I need to be reminded of this truth today. Everyone can relate to humble people and certainly are more willing to do so. Very interesting timing as God spoke to me through this today.
After all, I am just a clumsy ass!
