1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, in view of God’s mercy, to offer you bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God- this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Here are some parallels to the Christian diet:
We need to wake up and exercise (spiritually). Just like exercising in the morning, it tends to give us more energy to help us get through the day…. only if we do it.
The more we get into it the more benefits we reap (though it’s easy to get frustrated when we don’t immediately see the benefits)
We need others to help us. Without accountability, it is very hard to maintain by ourselves and very easy to slack
Old habits die hard- when we aren’t exercising our spiritual muscle, we can easily fall back into ourselves and our destructive patterns apart from Christ
Healthier- everyone benefits, not just ourselves
Look better to others- people will want to know what we’ve been doing, when we have Godly joy.
Modeling a healthier lifestyle for our children that works (if persistent)
Confidence and peace- that we are going in the right direction, with God’s guidance
Extended life- this is the most important that we can inherit an eternal kingdom with Christ
Furthermore when I go to a gym, I may not always be doing the exercise or equipment correctly. Therefore I can’t get maximal benefit. An experienced trainer offers guidance, pointers and encouragement. God serves as a personal trainer that can help us to understand customized exercises for us to help us gain maximal benefit to how we can best be used for His glory.
We as Christians have a duty to live out God in our lives. This does take “the E word” though… Exercise. Whenever I see a buff dude, admittingly I would like to look like that, though I don’t put the time, energy and effort to do so. It is no different with Christianity. Our lives should reflect elements of Christ so non-believers can know that God is alive and at work in our lives and that God’s love, grace, mercy and forgiveness is available to all who seek it.
John 15: 7-8
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you with, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
